Esoteric is a high-end Japanese audio manufacturer that’s been around since the mid-1980s and specializes in elite hi-fi components — amplifiers, DACs, streamers, CD transports and turntables — typically reserved for deep-pocketed audiophiles. Its flagship “Grandioso” range of components, for example, typically costs between $20,000 and $80,000 each.

The company’s “05” range of hi-fi components is its most affordable — the brand considers it an entry point into luxury hi-fi — but it’s still very expensive. And now the company has released new and improved models of two of its “best-selling” components in that range.

Meet Esoteric’s N-05XE streaming preamplifier and S-05XE power amplifier.

Both of these new components are part of the brand’s next evolution of its 05 range — which it’s calling “XE” — and essentially new-and-improved versions of its N-05XD streaming preamplifier and S-05 power amplifier.

And naturally, the N-05XE streaming preamplifier and S-05XE power amplifier are optimized to work together and be the hub of a truly elite modern hi-fi system.

An upgraded, best-selling combo

The N-05XE is a network streaming, DAC and preamplifier, just like its predecessor, but it features a new discrete DAC and advanced network-engine technologies to support even higher-resolution audio.

Additionally, Esoteric states that its dual-balanced preamplifier is derived directly from its flagship Grandioso models and includes a high-quality built-in headphone amplifier.

According to the brand, it’s “designed to deliver the highest sound quality in the smallest possible system configuration.”

The S-05XE is the muscle. It’s a no-compromise stereo power amplifier with Class A amplification.

Esoteric claims it features a “newly designed, fully symmetrical balanced input buffer amplifier, a large 1,000 VA toroidal-core power transformer, and a unique dual-mono power-supply smoothing circuit.”

Naturally, it’s designed to power some pretty high-end loudspeakers. It’s capable of driving 30 watts per channel into 8 ohms or 60 watts per channel into 4 ohms. It supports multi-amplifier configurations as well; in bridged (BTL) mode, it delivers 120 watts into 8 ohms.

According to the brand, the S-05XE establishes “a new benchmark in Class A stereo power amplification.”
