Timex’s Hollywood Heavyweight ’70s Watch Gets an Affordable Chronograph Redux

This latest launch is in good company, as previous releases in its vintage-inspired family include a day-date and GMT.

Over the course of the last few months, Timex has launched some serious heavy-hitters. Some of them have been met with a lot of fanfare — like its Pulp Fiction reissue or its Don Draper-inspired Omega dupe — and others have had a decidedly quieter drop — like this field watch.

It does not appear that the beloved budget-friendly brand is slowing down anytime soon, as today marks another new release in the Q Timex Continental Chronograph.

There are four versions of this watch, each with its own color scheme. Two have integrated bracelets and the other two have leather straps.

Hollywood horology

The Q Timex Continental is inspired by and styled after the bold designs of 1970s Hollywood. However, this new edition isn’t the first in the family.

Timex has already launched a pair of watches in the Continental lineup. One is a classic, dressy day-date, and the other is a travel-friendly GMT. Both were launched over the course of the last year.

I may be biased, but I think the panda-like dial (it’s actually stainless steel, not white) is the best of the bunch.

This new take cops its siblings’ styling — both their clean case design and, most notably, their mesmerizing concentric-circle etched dial — but expands into uncharted territory by adding chronograph functionality, making for a more sporty, motoring-friendly take.

That also means that, unlike its siblings, this watch has a pair of sub-dials, as well as a unidirectional rotating bezel, making utilizing it for speed- and distance-based timekeeping a breeze. Those elements also obviously add some distinct chrono styling into the mix.

Four of a kind

There are four configurations for this new release that share numerous stylistic and functional similarities, but also have distinct differences. For instance, all are equipped with the same analog quartz movement — one that’s both highly accurate and incredibly reliable.

The watches also have the same stainless steel case and dial design, although they differ in their colorways. There’s a stainless and black (which kind of mimics the look of panda dials), blue and white, black and green and black and gold.

The beating heart within these watches is a quartz analog movement, accurate within milliseconds per day.

Those first two (panda, blue and white) also come with integrated link bracelets, whereas the last two have brown leather straps. The strap choice also alters the price, with the bracelet costing a bit more than the leather strap.

However, beyond that, they’re all identical in regard to functionality, reliability, durability and more. Hopefully, these watches are an indication of Timex’s increased commitment to crafting these stylish retro watches for remarkably low prices (and I suspect they are).
