A Beloved Ikea Collection Returns with a New Batch of Future Classics

After a nine-year hiatus, the retailer’s famed PS collection is set for a long-awaited comeback. It looks worth the wait.

The name Ikea stands for Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd, a reference to its founder and his hometown in rural Sweden.

But today, it might as well translate to good design and low prices.

Nowhere in the company’s vast, sprawling catalog is that premise more pronounced than in the PS collection, returning this year for the first time in nearly a decade.

Democratic design

The PS collection dates back to 1995, when Ikea sought to reclaim its identity at the forefront of Scandinavian design.

Its catalog at the time was still reeling from the ripple effects of the 1987 stock market crash.

“Ikea was surrounded by a design world that was successfully interpreting Scandinavian aesthetics.”

“After a disjointed 1980s, Ikea had lost control of its range and had been close to losing its foothold and its identity,” the company admits.

Meanwhile, “British, Japanese and Italian designers started creating restrained design in light woods … Ikea was surrounded by a design world that was successfully interpreting Scandinavian aesthetics,” it adds.

The first PS collection debuted at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, winning over critics and consumers with mindfully designed pieces inspired by Scandinavian heritage. That is, furniture and homewares defined by clean lines and playful functionality.

Importantly, each item was priced to sell, so to speak, catering to all budgets with prices starting at 5.90 euros.

Still playful

Ikea has consistently added to the PS collection over the years, resulting in a handful of icons, such as the Lömsk Swivel Armchair (2003) and Expandable Pendant Lamp (2014). However, the 2026 edition will be the first since 2017.

At first glance, it looks to be well worth the wait.

While the full 35-piece collection remains under wraps for now, with a launch date set for May 14, Ikea has already unveiled three new items.

The first is a pine rocking bench designed by Marta Krupińska, highlighting the collection’s commitment to joyful design.

“I wanted it to be a bit like a party, like singing together,” says Krupińska, who credits the benches found at Oktoberfest in Germany for inspiring the thought.

Let there be light

As tradition with PS, there’s also a lamp. Only this one, designed by Lex Pott, bends and articulates at a series of 45-degree angles that converts it into from an uplighter into a spotlight or reading lamp, all with simple twists.

It comes in three colors.

“I chose a warm, light yellow, which really lights up a space and adds a subtle touch of color, then cobalt blue, because it’s timeless, with a lot of history.

“Finally, I chose a dark Bordeaux red because it’s a more classical, warm tone that is versatile enough to fit with many different ambiences,” Pott explains.

Pump it up

Though the bench and lamp will no doubt arrive to their own scores of admirers, the headliner of the new PS collection is undoubtedly an inflatable lounge chair that comes with its own foot pump, if only for its provenance.

Designer Mikael Axelsson took inspiration from Ikea’s history, where failed attempts at inflatable furniture date back to the 1960s.

Here, however, a foam cover and carbon steel frame give the chair what its predecessors lacked: stability, durability and, most important of all, comfort.

“My initial idea was to create a metal frame with a balloon trapped inside.”

Availability and pricing

The updated PS collection goes on sale May 14, 2026, with prices expected to be in line with that of the rest of its catalog.

A global reveal is scheduled for May 13 at the Democratic Design Days, in Älmhult, Sweden, where every piece was designed and developed.
