Sonos’s New Speaker May Be the Company’s Most Versatile Ever

In early January, Bloomberg published a report claiming that Sonos would be releasing a bunch of new hardware this year. It was welcome news for Sonos fans, considering the brand hadn’t released any new speakers or hardware in over a year.

Then, at the end of January, Sonos revealed the first of those releases: the Amp Multi. It’s positioned as the company’s most advanced streaming amplifier to date, but, while cool, it’s really designed for professional installers rather than average Sonos consumers.

Fast forward to the present day, and Sonos appears to be gearing up to release its first “mass market” product of the year. Basically, if you’re a Sonos fan, it’s time to get a little more pumped.

First look at the Sonos Play

It’s not official just yet. But as multiple news outlets have already reported, a Best Buy in Canada has accidentally leaked details about the next Sonos speaker. It’s called the Sonos Play.

The Play is a portable speaker that’s positioned between the Move 2 and the Roam 2 in the company’s lineup. Like those two models, it’s a portable speaker that supports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi streaming.

That said, it actually appears to be more like a smaller version of the Move 2, as it has a USB-C auxiliary port, so you can use it as a wired speaker for a turntable or computer. (The USB-C port on the Roam 2 is just for charging.)

Best Buy has since deleted the product page for the Sonos Play, but the Redditor who spotted it took several screenshots of the speaker as well as the product description. Below is how it’s described.

“Take quality sound wherever you go with the Sonos Play Bluetooth wireless speaker. Its compact design fits easily in your hand, while automatic Trueplay tuning optimizes audio for any environment. Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth let you stream high‑quality audio from different devices and sources. Up to 24 hours of battery life avoids the need for frequent recharging.”

The speaker will be available in two colors: white or black. Unlike the Move 2 and Roam 2, the Play appears to come with an optional strap accessory that can be used to carry or hang it.

Price and availability

Obviously, nothing is official right now. But the listing said that the Play speaker will be available starting March 31. It’s likely that — especially given the leak — the speaker will be officially announced before that.

The speaker will cost $300, putting it firmly between the Move 2 ($499) and the Roam 2 ($179) in the company’s portable speaker offerings.
