Few coffee makers have earned the kind of devoted following that the Moccamaster commands.

Made by Dutch manufacturer Technivorm, it has been brewing coffee since 1969 — and for decades has held near-mythic status among coffee enthusiasts as the gold standard of drip coffee.

The entire line is SCA-certified, handmade in the Netherlands, and built to last a lifetime. And in a world where kitchen appliances seem engineered for obsolescence, that means something.

The classic Moccamaster most people think of is defined by its silvery/stainless steel body, which was well ahead of the modern trend in home appliances towards metallic sheens. But the brand has also offered a wide range of color options to suit all tastes for quite some time.

Part of the Moccamaster’s enduring appeal is its color lineup. The brand has long offered an impressive and ever-evolving range of finishes — from soft pastels to bold primaries — giving a machine with a very classic silhouette a surprisingly expressive personality. It is one of the more thoughtful moves in small appliance design, and it has kept the Moccamaster feeling fresh for over 50 years.

So, given that track record of expressive, evolving design, it’s surprising to learn that the company has never created a machine before that looked quite like this.

Despite the brand’s steady introduction of new shades and finishes over the decades, this is actually the first time the Dutch manufacturer has released a blacked-out carafe, which, when paired with the black KBGT machine, results in the stealthiest Moccamaster ever.

Meet the Moccamaster KBGT Midnight. This is the first Moccamaster to feature a black carafe, completing a head-to-toe all-black look the brand has never offered before.

The KBGT itself is the thermal carafe variant of the Moccamaster family, and it has always been the pick for people who want to step away from the machine and come back to hot coffee later. The Midnight edition makes that practical choice look considerably better.

The carafe’s new look doesn’t impact performance. It still holds a full 40-ounce (10-cup) carafe at the optimal extraction temperature — between 196 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit — meeting the Specialty Coffee Association’s Golden Cup Standard.

As the name suggests, the machine body and the thermal carafe are both finished in Midnight Black, giving the whole setup a cohesive, stealth aesthetic that feels like a long-overdue addition to the lineup.

Under the hood, the KBGT Midnight is the same excellent machine it has always been. It brews a full 40-ounce (10-cup) carafe at the optimal extraction temperature — between 196 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit — meeting the Specialty Coffee Association’s Golden Cup Standard.

The automatic drip-stop feature lets users pull the carafe mid-brew without making a mess, and the black stainless steel thermal carafe features a borosilicate glass lining to retain heat for hours after brewing.

The Moccamaster KBGT Midnight is available now directly from Moccamaster’s website at $359.
