“Collaboration” has almost become a dirty word in the fashion world. I can’t be the only one who cringes a bit when spotting a lowercase “x” between two brand names.

And yet, there are a handful of retailers and brands that collaborate with tact and purpose, creating products that neither brand would offer independently.

Huckberry is a great example, working thoughtfully with brands it has carried for a long time to inject its Austin, TX flavor into one-off designs.

The latest collaborative release from the online retailer is with the French footwear brand Jacques Solovière, which specializes in designing classic leather footwear, like oxfords, boots, loafers and sandals, that can be worn daily.

Huckberry pitched in on two signature models of Jacques Solovière’s best-selling Venetian loafer, which looks like a penny loafer without the bridge over the top panel, called the Jacques New. Both offer contrasting textures that complement an elevated-casual aesthetic.

My preference between the two is the Brown Suede, featuring a supple calfskin suede upper accented with brown leather piping around the top panel and collar. This particular shade, traditionally called tobacco brown, looks especially good with jeans and anything navy blue, but even works with black.

Weave it to me

The other half of the collaboration offers a more distinct look with a basket-weave leather top panel. Called the Perfo Black, after the perforated panel, it offers more ventilation than its suede companion.

The vamp is black calfskin leather, and the piping on the upper and collar is black suede. The backstay matches the piping with more black suede.

Despite being black, this is the more casual of the two shoes. The woven leather panel reserves this loafer for warm weather, while the brown one can be worn year-round.

Get a grip

Where the Jacques New really stands apart from most premium leather loafers is with a non-slip rubber outsole cleverly disguised by a leather midsole and heel stack.

It gives the appearance of a traditional full-leather sole, but offers far more traction and support.

The inside is just as comforting with a leather footbed that will mold to the owner’s foot over time and won’t get stinky and torn up like a synthetic footbed. It is also lined with soft calfskin leather.

Availability and pricing

Both designs work just as well with jeans and a t-shirt as they do with a suit and tie. They are well-built leather shoes that offer an easy solution to literally just slip on for the office, casual evenings out, weddings, date nights or any other occasion that calls for shoes.

The Huckberry x Jacques Soloviére Jacques New Loafers are available now from Huckberry for $410.

It is worth noting that the product page says “Made in France,” but all of the French brand’s shoes are actually hand-made in Portugal, which Huckberry correctly states in its promo email for the collaboration.
