Nike Gives the Air Max TL 2.5 a Quiet Luxury Makeover with a Pair of New Colorways

The Y2K-era tech runner just got its most versatile variants so far.

If you haven’t noticed, the Y2K-era running sneaker revival is in full swing. And few have led the charge stronger than Nike.

Amidst the sea of Air Max 97 and Plus reissues, one silhouette has been bubbling under the surface. The Air Max TL 2.5 wasn’t a popular model during its original 2006 run but has now found a new spirit as a lifestyle shoe. However, it still hasn’t become the hit it’s destined to be.

Until now, the sneaker has continued to ooze with the same tech-focused aesthetic as it did two decades ago. But with two new monochromatic variants, the TL 2.5 may have just crossed over into new territory.

Reviving a cult favorite

From the highly popular Zoom Vomero 5 revival to mash-up models like the P-6000 (blending elements from the Pegasus 2006 and Pegasus 25), Nike has taken advantage of the retro trend we’re currently experiencing. 

Nevertheless, not every release has sought to capitalize on past successes. For every Vomero or Pegasus that landed with fans back in the day, there were always sneakers that simply weren’t as popular.

The TL 2.5 was brought back to public consciousness when Comme des Garçons put a minimalist spin on the silhouette two years ago. Now they’re available in several colorways.

One such silhouette was the Air Max TL 2.5, which only had a brief retail run. It was part of the brand’s Total Air lineup with full-length visible Air cushioning underfoot. Overshadowed by its brethren, the TL 2.5 has become somewhat forgotten about … that is, until two years ago. 

Thanks to a 2024 collaboration with Comme des Garçons, the tech runner has resurfaced for a new era. CDG took the original look but made it more minimal, swapping the large Swoosh on the side for a smaller one in the corner (like the AM95). It also downplayed the visible Air unit quite a bit. This not only breathed new life into the silhouette but gave it credibility among the fashion crowd.

Not so bright

Hardcore fans will recognize the TL 2.5 for its unique take on the Air Max wave motif. Unlike the unbroken lines of the 95 or 97, the 2.5 features dashes that appear to be swimming along the upper. This gives the sneaker more of a tech-forward look that was perhaps ahead of its time back then.

Since the CDG collab, the TL 2.5 has dropped in a handful of colorways that bring back the original vibe of the 2006 sneaker. They’ve leaned into the Y2K aesthetic with bright hues like Citron and orange. Yet, collectors have clamored for something a bit closer to the black and white options that sold out quickly in 2024.

Quiet luxury

With two new colorways, the TL 2.5 has finally achieved quiet luxury status. The all-black and all-cream options are much more versatile than the colorful variants and more accessible than the sought-after CDG models. What’s more, they stay truer to the 2006 originals with the emphasized Air cushioning and proper Swoosh on the side.

It should be noted that the monochromatic versions are considered “Premium” takes on the TL 2.5. This means updated leather on the mudguard and the removal of the dashes below the eyestays, which simplifies the design without changing it too much.

Availability and pricing

Arriving overseas already, the Air Max TL 2.5 Premium should drop soon in the US. Pricing sits just north of the standard TL 2.5 at $200 (up from $190).
