For the better part of the last decade, maximalist running shoes have been defined by one brand in particular: Hoka. Thick midsoles, exaggerated geometry and a comfort-first ethos went from niche to norm. Today, just about every major footwear player has finally taken notice.

But Nike hasn’t just entered that conversation—it’s trying to reframe it entirely. The brand’s Nike Vomero Premium is its most unapologetically overbuilt answer yet: a high-stack, tech-heavy trainer that doesn’t hide its ambition.

Now, Nike is doubling down on that positioning with a new colorway that swaps loud performance cues for something far more considered.

A luxurious pivot

Beige Nike Air Zoom running shoe with black swoosh and visible green air cushion in sole.
At roughly 55mm in the heel and 45mm in the forefoot, the shoe offers one of the highest stack profiles on the market. Its dual Air Zoom pods are exposed within the midsole, allowing them to expand and contract more freely with each step.

If earlier versions of the Vomero Premium leaned into the visual language of performance—high contrast, technical overlays, and overt “run shoe” energy—this latest release takes a quieter route.

The palette lands squarely in the world of soft neutrals: layered beiges, warm tans and off-whites that blur the line between performance gear and lifestyle object. It’s the kind of tonal restraint more commonly associated with premium fashion labels than max-cushion trainers.

The more classic-looking gum sole is one small design detail that goes a long way to elevating the luxury look of this particular colorway.

That shift isn’t happening in a vacuum. Publications like The New York Times have recently framed beige and its adjacent hues as shorthand for modern luxury. The subtle shades are both understated and quietly expensive. Nike’s interpretation fits that mold almost too well.

Underneath, though, nothing about the shoe has been toned down. The Vomero Premium still packs Nike’s most aggressive cushioning setup in the category, with a towering midsole that rivals Hoka’s signature maximalist look.

It’s a shoe that prioritizes impact protection and long-haul comfort, built as much for recovery miles and all-day wear as it is for serious training.

What’s changed is how all that engineering is presented. Instead of shouting about its performance, this version lets the shape and proportions do the talking. The result feels less like a pure running shoe and more like a crossover—something that can credibly live in both a gym locker and a well-curated closet.

The Nike Vomero Premium in its Pale Ivory/Sanddrift colorway is available now via Nike and select retailers. At $230, it lands at the top of Nike’s running lineup, in line with other high-stack, max-cushion trainers.

It was always priced like a premium performance shoe—now it finally looks the part.
