This is not a cast-iron skillet. Made in collaboration with commercial chef cookware purveyor JB Prince, SolidTeknics Professional Iron Skillet is a machine-wrought iron skillet, and it’s good at pretty much everything.
Formed through a proprietary machine pressing and perfectly smooth discs of wrought iron, the Kickstarter claims the pans are lighter weight than traditional cast-iron cookware and, because they’re formed from compressed, smooth surfaces, season much easier. If that sounds a lot like a carbon steel skillet, you’re on the right track. “Two ways to think of it: like a French carbon steel pan, but rivetless 1-piece, stronger, lighter, more conductive, and far more durable. Or, like a cast iron pan, but more conductive, won’t crack, and half the weight,” the Kickstarter reads.
As of posting, the crowdfunding total had already tripled its $20,000 goal. Pans, available in 8- and 10.5-inch options and starting at $54, will ship in December.
