Harbor Freight’s Original Viral Tool Just Got Even More Affordable Than Usual

Spring Black Friday is here, which means the retailer’s first-generation meme tool gets a significant discount.

The Icon Locking Flex-Head Ratchet and Bit Set, more infamously known as the “meme tool” is hardly the only pocketable driver of its kind. In fact, it only takes a quick Google search to confirm that most major tool suppliers offer something pretty comparable.

Nevertheless, like other Harbor Freight online sensations, it commands a cult following, as its compact size and impulse-worthy price mean that it remains the standard by which all other competitors are judged. Hell, for those reasons, even the retailer’s own follow-up doesn’t stack up in the eyes of the most diehards.

Given that Harbor Freight’s Spring Black Friday sale this week has the meme tool cheaper than usual, I couldn’t resist picking one up for myself. Even at its usual MSRP of $40, I’d have been happy with it, but at 30 percent off this thing is a no-brainer.

A compact heavyweight

That’s because it’s a tool that truly punches above its weight. While the entire cased set comes in smaller than an iPhone, I’ve found myself reaching for it when working on everything from cars to household projects.

32 different bits means that it can tackle a variety of different jobs.

On the one hand, it’s just plain convenient. Being so easily pocketable, you can bring along all 32 bits to ensure that you have the right fitting for the job, rather than guessing what you’ll need.

However, it’s also highly versatile. In addition to spanning Phillips, slotted, torx, hex and pozidrive standards, the set somehow manages to bundle both an extension and an adapter.

As such, whether you need the extra torque of a T-handle or the additional reach of a driver extension, it’s equipped to handle multiple setups. I especially like the modularity of the package, because it allows for quick swaps as you progress through a job.

Optimized imperfection

Now, as a small bit-focused set, the original meme tool obviously doesn’t include everything you could ever need to be prepared. For instance, there’s an included ¼-inch drive adapter, but it won’t do you much good without sockets.

Still, if you’re a motorcyclist or someone who wants to improve your car’s roadside kit, it makes for money well spent. Being smaller than a smartphone, it’s of little consequence to your cargo capacity.

Besides, what the original meme tool gives up in additional piece count to its meme tool successor, it more than makes up for with inclusions like its pass-through ratchet. In size and versatility alone, it’s a compelling alternative at less than half the price.

Ultimately, though, its value is really in whatever you make of it. Be it as an emergency provision, a means to foster internet karma or a platform for building the ultimate travel tool kit, you really can’t go wrong.
