“Everyday carry” — EDC — can mean a lot of things. For some, it’s a pocket knife, a watch and a wallet. For others, it might be a point-and-shoot, wireless earbuds and an external battery. The term, which refers to the items you deem important enough to carry daily, is as flexible as our needs are unique, which is also an apt way to describe a new everyday backpack by a brand called Osuza.

The Osuza Canvas is unlike any pack we’ve ever seen; it uses military carry systems as inspiration but is geared toward artists, designers, photographers and other creative types… yet also works fine as a gym or work bag. It doesn’t open from the top like a typical backpack either — instead, it butterflies open with Velcro and clips to lay completely flat. To arrive at that design, Osuza’s founders took inspiration from street hawkers who arrange goods like hats and handbags out on large tarps that they can quickly draw up with a rigged cord system (you know, in case the cops come).

Osuza’s system is more elegant than that, though. The bag is riddled with loops and sleeves and zippered pouches to house everything from pens to paints in its expandable 20- to 40-liter volume. There’s even a central panel that uses compression straps to hold clothing or larger items, and Osuza makes a small number of pouch accessories that integrate modularly into the bag’s military-grade MOLLE webbing. Of course, the Osuza Canvas also comes with some of the features you know, love and need, like a carefully hidden external-access laptop sleeve, comfortable padded shoulder straps and a lifetime guarantee.
