Modular jackets have a … rocky reputation. After all, what works well for other types of gear doesn’t necessarily translate to apparel. We’ve even specifically decried the once-common 3-in-1 versions in the past as jacks of all trades and masters of none.

But where many brands have failed, others sometimes succeed. Such is the case with the collaborative Engineered Garments x Nanga Detachable Down Coat, which takes a far different, much more successful approach to the category.

The jacket comes in six pieces, with more potential combinations than you can shake your fist at.

More than meets the eye

One of the reasons the Detachable Down Jacket succeeds where other jackets fail is that it isn’t a layered coat. Rather than having a detachable liner (which is often pushed as a potential standalone coat, but let’s be real, nobody is doing that,) it’s more akin to a standard puffer coat.

The modularity instead comes in a series of zippered, detachable pieces inspired by Lego, Transformers and other puzzle toys. There’s the main vest, the hood, the sleeves and two length-adding pieces at the bottom.

With all six pieces, the jacket is a full parka, but it can be stripped down to just a vest (and everything in between.)

Keep all six pieces together, and you’ve got yourself a full-length parka coat. Remove them all and it strips down to just a vest. And you can imagine the wide array of combinations therein.

Better still, all the zippers — which connect and disconnect the individual pieces — all have their own insulated plackets, which are covers that hide the zippers from the naked eye and protect those joints from exposure to weather.

Piece by piece

Although the modularity of this jacket is its major highlight and strength, it’s far from the only thing it has going for it. For instance, the exterior is crafted from tough ripstop nylon that’s resistant to both inclement weather and abrasions.

The shell is also lightweight, which pairs well with its insulation —Nanga’s signature superior down filling. Together, they ensure the wearer will feel cozy and warm even as the Mercury takes a major dip.

The Detachable Down Coats also makes for easy wearing in any weather, especially if you customize the pieces to the forecast. Better still, the jacket features an internal harness that allows the user to remove it without actually taking it off, so you can get some air while wandering bodega aisles without having to figure out how to carry your coat in the meantime.

Lastly, it’s available in four smart colorways: black, navy, khaki and purple. If you’re really intrepid and get more than one jacket, you can mix and match the panels, allowing for even more stylistic customization.
