Every Traveling Wireless Headphone Owner Needs This $40 Accessory

Don’t be forced to used the cheap wired earbuds from Delta.

How many times have you been on a flight, wanted to watch a movie on the plane’s little television, and then realized you couldn’t use your wireless headphones? Probably a lot. Most wireless over-ear headphones, like my Bowers & Wilkins PX, come with a wire for just these types of situations, of course, but if you’re like me, you always forget to travel with it. And if you favor true wireless earbuds, like AirPods, there’s no “get-out-of-jail” wire so you’re basically forced to use the cheap wired earphones that the airplane gives you (or makes you purchase). It sucks.

Fortunately, Twelve South just released a Bluetooth dongle — AirFly ($40) — that’s specifically designed to solve this problem. The dongle is simple to set up. Just charge the AirFly, pair it with the headphones, plug it into the plane’s headphone jack, press its “pair” button on the front of the dongle — and you’re good to go. It’s important to note that Bluetooth headphone adapters aren’t anything new, but Twelve South is being clever by marketing it specifically for AirPods. We all Most people love AirPods.

AirFly is ideal for pairing true wireless earbuds, AirPods, on an airplane’s in-flight entertainment system, but the little dongle can be used with any other wireless headphones and earphones, like Bose QC35 II or Sony’s 1000XM2, and in other situations. You can plug it into a treadmill or stationary bikes at the gym, or even plug it into your TV (if it has a 3.5mm jack) for a private session. The AirFly has a built-in battery that lasts up to 8 hours. It charges via USB.

For anybody who flies a lot and loves their AirPods — or any other wireless headphone — this little dongle could be a game changer, and your new favorite travel essential. (Aside from the AirPods, of course.)

Twelve South’s AirFly costs $40 and is available at the Gear Patrol Store, as well as Amazon.
