Ressence built a successful brand around the visual trickery of making mechanical watches look like moving sculptures, hemispherical high-resolution screens or some combination of the two.

But a new collaboration with Japanese visual artist Terumasa Ikeda advances the brand’s mind-bending horological geometry to a point that resembles sci-fi tech. And it is done with conventional materials and ancient Japanese crafts updated with modern tech.

The Type 9 Ikeda is built on the most straightforward, time-only Ressence model, but the dial Ikeda designed and crafted is nothing short of extraordinary. Even if you can’t read the time, which admittedly took me some effort to figure out, it is a mesmerizing work of art that straps to your wrist.

After getting your bearings on the neon cyber-punk cyclone dial, you’ll notice three concentric circles, with the smallest rotating inside the middle one, which in turn, rotates inside the largest. All while the largest circle rotates around the dial.

The minutes track is located on the titanium bezel, and the hours track is the central, circular segment of the dial.

A line of tiny multicolored rectangles cutting across the large circle is the minute hand. It points to a dash minutes track cut into the titanium bezel with a glossy DLC coating.

Hours are indicated by a similar, smaller rainbow line cutting halfway through the smallest circle, which is the hour hand. An hour track is made up of a spectrum of neon dashes running along a black ring, which comprises the central portion of the rotating dial.

A neon greenish-blue Ressence hand logo represents 12:00, allowing the wearer to infer the remaining hours. All of the other lines, rings and symbols are just vibrant decoration.

The hypnotic neon spiral dial churns inside a 39mm titanium case with a glossy DLC coating, which comes on a black cordovan leather strap with a matching titanium pass-through pin buckle.

There is no crown, creating sleek, balanced lines running lug-to-lug. The movement is adjusted by rotating the circular-brushed titanium caseback.

All of the lights

Terumasa Ikeda’s specialty is creating the neon glow displayed on the Type 9 Ikeda dial by updating a centuries-old Japanese craft with modern materials and technology. His sculptures, along with the watch they inspired, appear to be electrically powered but are only reacting to light.

Ikeda combines traditional Japanese urushi lacquer work, hinoki woodworking, raden mother-of-pearl and gold leaf with CNC 3D printing to create otherworldly interpretations of tea and incense containers.

The black portions of the Type 9 Ikeda dial are made with black lacquer, while the neon, multicolored detailing is accomplished with hand-cut and colored mother-of-pearl, which provides organic iridescence. The extremely delicate pieces are applied by hand to the three dial segments, like a mosaic.

The illusory light show is powered by the proprietary Ressence Orbital Convex System, or ROSC 9, driven by the minute axle of a customized and reinforced ETA Caliber 2892/2 automatic movement. It beats at 4Hz and provides a 36-hour power reserve.

Availability and price

This unprecedented dial is genuinely a wearable Ikeda sculpture that also tells time, if not in the most legible way. The extremely time-consuming process of creating each dial, not to mention the labor required to make every Ressence watch, means that the Type 9 Ikeda is limited to just 8 pieces worldwide.

The Type 9 Ikeda is available now, but can only be purchased in person from select Ressence retailers, and costs $41,500.
