In recent years, Seiko has really established its 5 Sports line as its affordable entry point to the brand. The line has continuously and aggressively expanded as its popularity has grown, and now includes a wide range of divers, field watches, and GMTs. The collection is now so diverse that someone could easily build out an entire collection consisting solely of Seiko 5 Sports models… and without spending much money, either.

Today, Seiko’s entry-level line expands yet again with a new take on the Seiko 5 Sports Field that adds a nifty feature aimed squarely at outdoor enthusiasts.

And it looks to me like it’s going to be another affordable hit for the brand.

Maps are for quitters

On the heels of Vacheron Constantin launching the year’s coolest watch last month with the Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points, Seiko has a compass-themed watch of its own. And this one’s just a bit more affordable than the $41,000 Vacheron.

The new Seiko 5 Sports Field Compass Bezel is, more or less, a Seiko 5 Sports Field with a larger case featuring a rotating compass bezel. The watch keeps the dial layout found on the original 5 Sports Field with wide fencepost hands, an arrow-tipped seconds hand, a day-date window at 3:00 and a classic military time scale with hours 13-24 printed inside the main Arabic hour track.

Those Arabic hours are all printed with a thick application of LumiBrite, with the five-minute blocks on the minute track and the bezel pip also being lumed. Throw in the well-lumed handset, and this thing glows like a torch in the dark.

The new larger stainless steel case measures 41mm across, 13.2mm thick and 48.5mm long. It’s certainly more substantial than before, but it should still be plenty wearable with those dimensions. Hardlex crystals are found on the front and back of the watch, and the water resistance remains an outdoor-ready 100m.

The movement is also unchanged, with the Seiko Caliber 4R36 providing 41 hours of power on a full wind and boasting both hacking and hand-winding.

Of course, the big change here is the rotating compass bezel. It’s labeled for the four cardinal points as well as northeast, southeast, etc., and is equipped with grippy double knurling on its edge. To use the compass in the northern hemisphere, all you have to do is hold your watch level, point the hour hand at the sun and then rotate the bezel so that south is halfway between the hour hand and 12:00. This tells you which direction you’re facing, allowing you to orient yourself.

There are four versions of this new field watch, split into two groups. The first group has more of a Rolex Explorer II vibe, similar to the Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT. It has a plain steel bezel, comes on a three-link steel bracelet, and is available with a black (HDB006) or white dial (HDB007).

The other duo I find more interesting, personally. They come mounted on either a green or brown stitched nylon strap accented with brown leather inlays. It’s a cool, outdoorsy look that’s unique for Seiko and really matches the aesthetic of the watch. The green strap is paired with a green sunburst dial (HDB008) and black circular-brushed bezel, while the brown (HDB009) gets a brown sunburst dial and brown bezel with the same striking finishing treatment.

Availability and pricing

While compass bezels aren’t the most popular feature among tool-watch enthusiasts, I still think they make a logical addition to the Seiko 5 Sports Field. And the execution here happens to look really, really good.

I’m especially fond of the brown reference, and it’s also the cheapest. It, along with its green sibling, is priced at just $385. The two versions on steel bracelet are slightly pricier at $400, on account of said bracelet. All four are slated for release in July.
