The GG-W-113 field watch, contracted by the US Military in 1967, is arguably the most influential watch in history not created by a major watch brand.

The design codified the mil-spec field watch as we know it today, exhibited by the Hamilton Khaki Field, Timex MK-1, Benrus DTU and countless others. Within that army of like-dialed field watches, one of the best affordable examples comes from the indie brand Praesidus.

The Praesidus Jungle Field was already a faithful execution of the familiar GG-W-113 template, with a sterile dial, 34mm case and quartz movement, generously priced at $195. Now, the young American watchmaker offers a version geared toward enthusiasts with a 38mm sandblasted steel case and an automatic movement.

The new Jungle Field Automatic 38 comes in two dial options with nuanced differences. The more faithful version has a matte-black dial with all-white numerals, while the higher-resolution iteration uses a grainy popcorn-textured dial and a creamy yellow 1 through 12 track to optimize legibility.

Crucially, both dials are nearly identical to their predecessors. They have the characteristic large 1 through 12 numerical hour track underlined by a smaller 13 through 24 military time track. A dash minute track with a triangle every fifth minute frames the dial.

The sword hour and minute hands and the triangle five-minute markers are filled with matching beige Super-LumiNova.

The classic military dial is capped with a double-domed sapphire crystal, and even with the protruding crystal, the case measures a sleek 10mm tall.

Classic or contrast

Both debut variations of the Jungle Field Automatic 38 remain devoutly faithful to the iconic 1967 field watch design. The smoother matte black dial appeals to a more refined look and absolute purists, while the popcorn-textured black dial adds a layer of functionality for anyone actually wearing the watch in the field.

Anyone picking up this very affordable field watch also has a choice between two excellent and on-brand strap options. First, there is a two-piece olive-drab canvas pin-buckle strap with a leather lining that looks like Vietnam-era military surplus.

Alternatively, there is a more old-fashioned, WWII-era brown leather pin buckle strap that will look better for daily wear on most wrists.

Whichever dial and strap combination you choose, the Jungle Field Automatic 38 is powered by a reliable Miyota Caliber 9039 automatic movement, which beats at 4Hz and offers a 42-hour power reserve.

Between the 38mm sandblasted stainless steel case that muffles any scuffs or abrasions, the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and the 100m water resistance, the Jungle Field Automatic is a faithful reproduction that is fit for service.

Availability and price

The Praesidus Jungle Field Automatic 38 is available now from Praesidus for $550, regardless of which dial or strap you choose.

Praesidus isn’t just inspired by the watches worn by US Military veterans, the brand is dedicated to supporting those who have served. Five percent of the proceeds from all watches sold go to programs supporting military veterans.
