Bauer’s new storage solution brings some thoughtful changes to a rugged and highly modular design.

If you’re still mired in the cold of January and February, don’t lose hope, because warmer weather is just around the corner. We’re already well into March, so the first day of spring will be here before you know it.

However, this likely means your garage could use a little attention, whether it’s unfinished projects, neglected cleaning or accumulated clutter.

Lucky for you, there’s a new version of a Harbor Freight toolbox that promises to be so much smarter than its predecessor. Between added refined features and increased modularity, it heralds big improvements.

A smarter rolling toolbox

It’s the Bauer Modular Rolling Toolbox product #71046, and it’s arrived as an overhaul to #58512. While the two might share the same name and come at a similar price point, the updates are worth recognizing, and the extra $5 is definitely warranted.

For one, the wheels are much bigger to make the entire toolbox easier to roll. Where the previous version came with 5.8-inch casters, those on the new-and-improved Bauer box now measure 8 inches across.

What’s more, Harbor Freight has made the lid hinged rather than lift-off, so it’s not only more user-friendly to operate but also more secure in how it closes. Previously, some users had reported issues with alignment because of the design.

There are plenty of other thoughtful details, as well. Along with a kickplate to facilitate mobility, it also brings two integrated tape measure clips, an extension cord holder, some tie-down attachment points and even a dedicated level storage.

Building within a system

Now, being a part of the larger Bauer ecosystem, modularity is a central part of this toolbox’s value proposition. Per the description, it can be configured in over 50 customized combinations.

Accordingly, Harbor Freight also made the handle removable as part of the redesign. In practice, this allows for easier transport, as it reduces the overall storage height of the box and makes it more space-efficient.

And that’s not all. Inside, it once again comes with a removable organizer to allow for both EDC essentials and larger tools. However, it’s been redesigned to provide improved access to the rest of the interior,

Add to that an IP65 dust and water resistance rating, a 60-pound load limit, as well as stacking capabilities with other Bauer modular storage solutions, and it makes for a rugged, versatile toolbox that’s just as capable in the garage as it is at the job site.
