Westfalia’s Sven Hedin Camper Turns 50 with a Retro, Heritage-Rich Redux

The outfit has given its enduring fixed-roof rig an anniversary celebration that goes heavy on the nostalgia.

Back in 1976, Westfalia introduced an adventurous campervan fit to carry the name of Swedish explorer Sven Hedin. A compact yet well-supported stay, it brought everything needed to be self-sustaining.

In the model’s half-century of existence, it’s departed from its Volkswagen LT origins and taken form as larger, more modern Mercedes- and MAN-based offerings. Still, the core of it has largely remained the same.

As a celebration of the Sven Hedin’s enduring presence, Westfalia has whipped up a new limited-run model. Its exploits won’t likely have it reaching US shores, but the classic motorhome design cues and premium amenities sure do tempt from afar.

Old-school design cool

Unsurprisingly, it’s called the ’50 Years Edition.’ Thankfully, though, Westfalia didn’t just slap a badge on a MAN TGE motorhome and call it a day.

In addition to some commemorative decals, the special Sven Hedin model brings a unique heritage-inspired look. Westfalia is offering it with exclusive color choices in light ivory, pure grey and grey white, all of which echo the palette of the model’s early years.

To that end, the 50-year treatment brings some old-school earth-tone stripes. They’re also a choice that’s intended to reflect the original Sven Hedin, and they make for a cool visual parallel half a century later.

Even still, the most transformative aspect of the Sven Hedin’s 50-year overhaul has to be its interior. In place of the standard textiles, you’ll find an exclusive brown upholstery that goes big on the retro vibes.

Together with the wood trim on the included overhead storage and galley, as well as touches like the optional beige flooring, it cultivates a delightfully dated ambiance.

Premium kit for off-grid exploits

Along with the eye-catching anniversary aesthetics, the 50 Years Edition features an abundance of included equipment. It’s based on the Westfalia’s Premium trim. Like all Sven Hedins, though, it remains a fixed-roof in standard configuration.

Still, beyond basic amenities like a wet bath, a two-burner gas stove and a 90-liter compressor fridge, it benefits from plenty of creature comforts. A large skylight, underfloor heating, a lounging bench and an expanding sleeping area all contribute to an upscale feel.

Moreover, Westfalia’s Sven Hedin Premium treatment brings some big advantages over the Classic when it comes to tech. From adaptive cruise control and active safety features to tire pressure monitoring, Westfalia Connect and navigation and infotainment, it’s much more refine.

Thankfully, it touts sufficient provisions to support your off-grid excursions. In addition to a 100-liter freshwater tank, a pair of 100-Ah lithium batteries and a 120-W solar panel, Westfalia also accounts for things like diesel heating and support for satellite.

Availability and pricing

As previously mentioned, Westfalia’s Sven Hedin 50 Year Edition is likely not bound for the US. It’s based on a TGE, a MAN commercial vehicle that’s not sold stateside.

However, if you live across the pond, you can pick one up starting at €99,990. If the included add-ons aren’t enough, Westfalia offers upgrades such as a rooftop pop-top and an off-road package.
