Most watches at this price point are throwaways. The Timex Expedition Scout 40mm Watch is not. It’s been the default recommendation for anyone who wants a capable, no-nonsense field watch without spending real money — and it has been for years. Why it’s worth considering

The Scout runs a reliable quartz movement — accurate, low-maintenance, and battery-powered for years at a stretch. The 40mm case diameter sits in the sweet spot: large enough to read quickly on the move, small enough to slip under a cuff. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters, which covers rain, creek crossings and the occasional careless dish-washing. The case is brass with a mineral crystal — honest materials for an honest price.

According to Teddy Baldassarre, the Scout represents one of the best entry points in the entire field watch category, full stop. A price this low hasn’t appeared in roughly a decade.

What separates the Scout from the flood of cheap watches is intentionality. Timex built its Expedition line around durability and utility, and the Scout carries that DNA without unnecessary complication. The Indiglo backlight — Timex’s patented electroluminescent panel — evenly illuminates the entire dial, a genuinely useful feature at 3 a.m. The nylon strap is replaceable and standard 20mm width, so customization is easy and cheap. There’s nothing here that doesn’t serve a purpose.

It’s not a luxury watch. The mineral crystal will scratch sapphire before sapphire scratches it. But for a first field watch, a beater, a travel piece or a camping companion, it handles everything asked of it without complaint.
