Ikea Just Called BS on the Modern Cooler Arms Race

The brand’s latest summer release feels like the anti-status-cooler: easy, functional enough, and priced accordingly. Too bad it doesn’t come in different colors.

For the better part of the last decade, the humble cooler has quietly undergone a glow-up.

What was once a cheap, grab-and-go summer staple has been re-engineered into a full-blown performance arms race. And to be fair, we’ve played a part in that—fixating on ice retention stats, dissecting materials and celebrating every new latch, lining and lash point along the way. The result: a category that’s steadily drifted away from its simple roots.

Ikea, as usual, doesn’t seem particularly interested in any of that. Which is why its latest affordable summer accessory reads less like an evolution—and more like a quiet correction.

The opposite of overkill

The Swedish furniture juggernaut’s new soft cooler won’t win any design or performance contests. But it also costs just $10.

The new Tofsand cooler bag feels like a throwback: simple, cheerful in a retro 80s sort of way and unapologetically affordable.

The Tofsand isn’t trying to outgun a Yeti Hopper Flip or other similar technical haulers.

It’s a soft-sided cooler with a zip top, a lightweight build, and just enough insulation to keep drinks and snacks chilled for a few hours at the park, beach, or backyard.

That’s it—and that’s kind of the appeal, with all apologies to our product-obsessed compatriots congregating in places like r/BuyItForLife.

I’m not personally in love with the neon aesthetic here, but it’s at least hard to ignore and therefore less likely to get left behind after an outdoor outing.

It’s easy to carry (though some buyers wish the shoulder straps were longer) and easy to stash. Thanks to its pink-and-orange colorway, it’s also hard to lose in a sea of muted outdoor gear, though we’re confident most buyers would welcome a more muted alternative too.

There’s no rotomolding, no bear-proof latches, no promise of multi-day ice retention. It’s a cooler designed for an afternoon outside, not a spec sheet.

Does this mean we’ll stop celebrating ever-more-capable cooling gear? No.

But we can also admit that many people don’t need that. They need something that works, doesn’t cost a fortune, and doesn’t feel precious.

That’s exactly where this lands.

The Tofsand cooler bag is available now at Ikea for just $10 – and like most Ikea products, it is eligible for return within 365 days for a full refund.

That’s not a typo—and it’s also the point. For less than the cost of lunch, you get a functional, lightweight cooler that covers the basics without overthinking them. It won’t replace a high-end option from Yeti or RTIC, but it doesn’t need to.

It’s a cooler for spontaneous plans, low-stakes outings, and anyone who’d rather spend their money on what goes inside it.
