Timex’s Best Dress Watch Gets an Elegant Upgrade From Its Favorite Collaborator

Todd Snyder applies his masterful touch to the new quartz Marlin.

Todd Snyder and Timex go way back.

The heralded fashion designer has worked with the American watch brand since he ran the J.Crew Men’s line through most of the 2000s.

When Timex revived the Marlin—a 34mm dress watch from the 1960s—in 2017, Todd Snyder was one of the first retailers to carry it. His well-respected stamp of approval helped make it one of Timex’s most successful watches of this century.

Since then, Mr. Snyder and Timex have collaborated on over twenty references. The long-running partnership has made good use of Timex’s extensive archive, and many of the releases were based on the Marlin.

The fruitful partnership continues with the Dylan Watch, a design inspired by the Dylan Jacket, a centerpiece of the Todd Snyder brand since its debut.

The most Todd Snyder Timex

The Dylan Jacket was one of Todd Snyder’s first designs when he went solo in 2011. It embodies the designer’s blend of mid-century American staples with elevated European craftsmanship.

Snyder has remarked on multiple occasions that it is one of his favorite pieces and is an annual best seller. The elevated trucker jacket has been produced in a wide range of fabrics, from luxurious Italian suede to Japanese denim.

This Timex watch, built on the new Marlin Quartz, is connected to the cult-classic jacket through the straps and dial colors. The dial comes in black and a rich olive green, two of the Dylan Jacket’s most popular colors.

Both references come on a dial-matching supple leather strap with a signed pin buckle and quick-release pins. The black one has a soft suede finish, while the green one has a smooth leather grain.

A classical dial

The Dylan Watch uses the same 34mm steel case as the original Marlin re-issue and dauphine hands from the watch’s second generation, which debuted on the California dial references.

Aside from the colors, the main differences between the dials on the Marlin Quartz and the Dylan Watch are the hour markers and the minutes track.

The latter uses a full set of italicized script Arabic numerals, akin to those found on early twentieth-century pocket watches, and a simple dash minutes track.

One more variation is hiding below six o’clock. The Dylan Watch is one of the few Timex and Todd Snyder collaborations to feature a double-signed dial.

Maybe the best feature of the Dylan Watch is that it is substantially more affordable than the Italian Suede Dylan Jacket that inspired it.

Not many people are willing and able to drop a grand on a luxurious suede trucker jacket, as iconic as it is, but nearly anyone can afford this suave quartz dress watch.
