Unimatic has produced an astounding volume of watches without breaking from its minimalist, industrial-inspired visual identity. Especially over the past couple of years, with the Milanese watchmaker cranking up its collaborative productions.

Historically, the most eye-catching designs have come from assisted endeavors, but the new U4S-T-LB is an in-house model that begs to be worn on sandy beaches and in sunny poolside cabanas.

It’s built on the Modello Quattro, a diver-field watch hybrid introduced in 2020 that’s tough as nails and ideally suited for adventurous daily wear.

This summer-ready model features the standard 40mm case, but at 12.7mm tall, it’s a bit slimmer than the original thanks to the Sellita Caliber SW200-1 automatic movement inside.

The dependable Swiss workhorse accommodates a clean, balanced time-only dial, and beats at 4Hz with a 41-hour power reserve. It is calibrated to a measured accuracy of +/-12 seconds per day.

Going back to Cali

The dial features a grainy matte gray plate that matches the case and is printed with a bold seafoam green California hour track. Originally called an Error-Proof dial when it was invented by Rolex in the 1940s, it is distinguished by Roman numerals on the top half and Arabic numerals on the bottom half.

The hour markers are coated in teal-emitting Super-LumiNova, and matched by inlays in the hour hand, minute hand and seconds hand lollipop counterbalance.

This is the first California dial I’ve seen from Unimatic since a Japan-exclusive release from 2025. It feels like a nod to Panerai, a fellow Italian watchmaker that popularized the feature and has influenced Unimatic in many ways.

Play hard

The biggest functional update over the standard steel Modello Quattro is the sandblasted titanium case, topped with a matching fixed monoblock bezel. It reduces the case weight to 65 grams, substantially lightening the load on your wrist.

The case is complete with the standard box sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and a screw-on titanium caseback, etched with a motif of NATO military symbols. It offers a robust water resistance of 300m, which is more than many dive watches can say.

This eye-catching Modello Quattro demonstrates how one alluring color, tastefully applied, can transform a pragmatic, minimalist timepiece into an off-hours, adventure-ready masterpiece.

Availability and pricing

The Unimatic Modello Quattro U4S-T-LB with seafoam green Cali dial and nylon NATO strap is available now from Unimatic for $1,660. As is largely standard practice for the Milanese watchmaker, it is a limited edition of just 300 pieces.
