Filson Has Revived and Revised Arguably Its Best USA-Made Heritage Work Jacket

While everything Filson offers is pretty great, the pieces of gear that emerge from the brand’s Seattle-based workshop are among the finest the brand has to offer.

The Filson Workshop Chore Jacket, initially launched as a limited-run item in 2019, is one such piece of gear. In fact, it wouldn’t be too much to say that it was among the brand’s best work jackets ever made.

Now, the brand has brought that same USA-made chore coat back from the dead, refining it further in the process. So, if you missed out on the initial run, now’s your chance to right that wrong.

Not a chore

Let’s start with what is returning. Thankfully, it’s a pretty long list. Overall, the jacket’s silhouette and styling remain pretty much entirely intact.

From its classic collar to its dual breast pockets and dual open-stow pouches, the pattern remains identical to the original. It also maintains its single interior pocket. Even the buttons and cuff stitching are true to the initial release’s pattern.

Furthermore, like the initial launch, this jacket features dual leather patches — one on the left breast pocket with a debossed Filson Workshop logo, and the other on the inside of the collar boasting each jacket’s individual production number relative to the full run of coats.

The heritage styling — and more importantly, the craftsmanship — of this coat is abundantly clear. Extreme care and love are imbued in every stitch. This isn’t just a jacket; it’s an heirloom.

Home on the range

While minimal, there are some alterations to this new take on the Filson Workshop Chore Jacket. Most significantly, they’re found in the coat’s primary material.

The original jacket was made from Filson’s signature Tin Cloth fabric. That remains true in this new version. However, the weight is slightly different.

Where the original was 11.5-ounce Tin Cloth, this one is slightly lighter at 10.5 ounces. That might seem slight, but it makes the jacket more easy-wearing and flexible overall. It also makes it more friendly to warmer weather wear. However, you can always layer underneath when things get cold.

The color is also different. The original jacket was a bit darker than this version’s Sepia colorway. Similarly, the leather patches are tanned darker. Even the buttons look slightly more antique.

All told, the changes, however slight, make for a much more refined piece of outerwear.
