Now back as retro runner, the Daybreak first came out in the late 1970s at the height of the 20th-century running boom.

Released in 1979, the model was Nike’s first to be built around a straight last. It also helped fuel Joan Benoit Samuelson’s legendary victory 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials, mere weeks after knee surgery.

But if provenance alone can’t elevate the Daybreak to the same pedestal as its better-known peers, how about a vintage-inspired makeover?

Already emerging overseas, the latest iteration of the Daybreak trades traditional nylon for a shaggy-suede upper, dyed royal blue typical of designs from the 1970s.

It also features a rare white outsole for a novel take on the Waffle, proving that even after half a century, it’s never too late to hit one’s stride.
