The British barn coat’s journey from utilitarian accessory into the closets of the aristocracy on its way to becoming a menswear staple across the world is pretty remarkable.

Barbour is the brand that epitomizes the category, having codified its features in the mid-twentieth century, but a range of brands from both sides of the pond produce excellent examples.

Todd Snyder is not often associated with Barbour-style barn jackets, but the American designer’s typically refined take on the Anglo outerwear icon is hard to resist. Better still, at 50 percent off, it is ridiculously affordable right now.

Dubbed the Long Stable Jacket, it is the longer of the brand’s two barn jackets. As you may have guessed, there is also a Short Stable Jacket.

To put it in Barbour terms, the Long Stable Jacket is modeled after the Ashby and Bedale, while its cropped companion is more like the Spey.

The Short Stable Jacket is currently out of stock, but the longer variety in a gorgeous olive green corduroy, left over from the Fall/Winter 2025 collection, is still available at half its original price.

Almost all of the features that you know and love from the Ashby and Bedale are present in the Long Stable Jacket. It has welted hand pockets, dual snap-flap bellows pockets at the waist, a contrasting corduroy-lined collar with a snap throat latch and raglan sleeves.

I say almost all because there is one notable difference.

A tiny wale

Half the appeal of Barbour’s jackets comes from the brand’s waxed canvas, which it pioneered over a century ago. But Todd Snyder went a different route here.

The wale of the corduroy used for the body of the jacket is ultra-fine, making it extremely soft.

The durability and water resistance of waxed canvas is exchanged for a softer, more breathable, but still rugged ultra-fine wale corduroy. Wale is the measurement of the distance between ripples in corduroy cloth; the closer it is, the smoother it feels.

The brand does not state the actual wale, but it looks like 16w, which is about as fine as it gets. From a few feet away, the material looks more like velvet or suede than corduroy.

But the intricate weave of corduroy imbues the fabric with far more flexibility, breathability and tear-resistance than a standard cotton weave.

This fabric was a brilliant choice for a British barn jacket because it retains the expected ruggedness while iterating on the style with an upscale look.

Availability and pricing

Todd Snyder’s Long Stable Jacket debuted at $498 last year, which was right on par with its Barbour counterparts. But now that it is out of season, it is subject to the brand’s notoriously generous markdown policy, which drops it by 51 percent, down to $244.

Medium is the only size sold out at the time of publishing. If you’re thinking of purchasing one, take note that all sales are final.
